TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT |
| A total knee replacement
is a surgical procedure whereby the diseased knee joint is replaced
with artificial implant. The knee is a hinge joint which provides
motion at the point where the thigh meets the lower leg. The
thigh bone (or femur) abuts the large bone of the lower leg
(tibia) at the knee joint. During a total knee replacement,
the end of the femur bone is removed and replaced with a metal
shell. The end of the lower leg bone (tibia) is also removed
and replaced with a channeled plastic piece with a metal stem. |
|
| Once you have decided
to have knee replacement surgery, you have committed yourself
to a bit of work! Knee replacement surgery is very successful,
but the success of the procedure is due, in part, to the rehabilitation
period that follows the surgery. For patients to expect a good
result from knee replacement surgery, they must be an active
rehab participant! |
| HIP
REPLACEMENT |
A total hip replacement
(THR) - is a surgical procedure that re-forms the hip joint.
In THR, the head of the femur (the bone that extends from the
hip to the knee) is removed along with the surface layer of
the socket in the pelvis (the two large bones that rest on the
lower limbs and support the spinal column).
Hip replacement is major surgery and, for the first few days,
you'll want to take it easy. However, it's important that you
start some activities immediately to deal with the effects of
the anesthetic, help the healing and keep blood clots from forming
in your leg veins. Your doctor and physical and occupational
therapists can give you specific instructions on wound care,
pain control, diet and exercise. |
| ANKLE
REPLACEMENT SURGERY |
The ankle is one
of the most crucial joints in your body. Since the ankle is
a weight-bearing joint that absorbs the body's full impact,
pain from an injured or diseased ankle is especially severe
and debilitating. Because the ankle is so integral to an active
lifestyle, it is an injury-prone part of the body for young
and older people alike. Even moderate sprains and fractures
can lead to problems, sometimes years later.
If chronic and debilitating ankle pain has affected your quality
of life, then ankle joint replacement surgery may be an effective
pain relief option for you.
This area of the site features in depth information on ankle
fusion and ankle replacement surgery. |
| SHOULDER
REPLACEMENT SURGERY |
When your shoulder
is healthy and functioning properly, you won't give it much
thought. But when pain and stiffness interfere, you'll find
it hard to ignore. The most frequent source of debilitating
pain and joint destruction is arthritis.
Today, orthopaedic surgeons can replace damaged shoulder joints
thanks to joint replacement technology.
Shoulder replacement, or shoulder "arthroplasty,"
is the replacement of the ball of the upper arm and, often times,
the socket of the shoulder blade. |
| ELBOW
JOINT SURGERY |
Elbow is the most
vital joint of our body, exercised maximum for day-to-day activities.
The elbow is a hinge joint consisting of three bones. All three
of these bones are in contact with each other. The joint is
surrounded and lined by cartilage, muscles, and tendons that
provide support, stability, and ease of movement.
The elbow joint allows for the extension, flexion, and rotation
of the arm. The range of motion is dependent upon the proper
articulation of the elbow joint.
Restriction of this joint can be result of arthritis or trauma.
But thanks to Elbow replacement active movement can be restored.
Orthonova has successfully operated upon as young as 18 years
old patient for elbow replacement. |
